One singular sensation
I saw A Chorus Line last night.
I was among the early adopters of A Chorus Line, having seen the touring company when they hit the now-demolished Shubert Theatre in Century City in the mid-'70s. The show was a revelation, and I walked out of the theater invigorated, feeling like I too had been through the mill and emerged triumphant, just like the "kids" who got the gig in the line – which, tellingly, included the whole company in the finale, not just the ones who had made the final cut a few minutes earlier.
The Lovely Mrs. Hunter and the Little Hunters and I went to see the show last night, now, 30 years later. The Lovely Mrs. Hunter has also seen the show at the Shubert, and we were afraid that we had oversold it to the Little Hunters and that it would look like some old relic like the Beatles or black-and-white movies, something that seemed like a good idea at the time but it's a new century awready.
Happily, the show almost exactly the same, and as good as it ever was. There are some changes: There are some hip-hop moves in the dancing, the trombone part in Dance 10: Looks 3 has disappeared, and Paul McCartney now owns the music, but the characters are the same, their ambitions and their needs – to dance, to perform, to entertain, to get this job – as true and as heartfelt as they ever were. When the entire line assembled at the upstage backdrop, neatly in size order, raised their glittering gold top hats as one and started the finale number with a triumphant sing-shout of "ONE!!!" the whole house erupted in an ovation that rattled the gold decorations on the walls of the theater.
Afterwards, hanging around the stage door as my kids passed around their programs for autographs, I noticed how young, and fresh, and surprised by the attention the actors were. We walked back to the hotel invigorated, stopping at a Burger King for a late-night snack and spent the evening telling the Little Hunters about the first time we had seen the show and getting into a spirited discussion of Donna McKechnie's interpretation of Cassie as opposed to Charlotte d'Amboise's.
The show goes to Broadway the end of September. It's gonna be there a while.
One last touch of Stardust
The Stardust Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip, scheduled to become a vacant lot sometime after the first of the year, will host the Adult Nightclub and Exotic Dancer awards tonight. I am unfortunately unable to attend, being some 566 miles away, according to Mapquest. If you're going, feel free to drop a line and let me know how it turmed out.

A true “comic’s comic,” Slayton has been performing his own intense style of stand-up comedy for 25 years, becoming one of the best-known and most energetic comedians on the road. Slayton has also had scene-stealing roles in such films as Get Shorty, Ed Wood and Wayne’s World 2.
Special guest presenters have also become the norm at the ED Awards Show, and the 2006 version is no exception. Penthouse’s Pet of the Year for 2006 and ED’s 2006/2007 Adult Nightclubs Guide cover girl Jamie Lynn will be on hand as a special presenter (courtesy of Penthouse Magazine), as will adult film super starlet and feature entertainer Stormy Daniels and adult film legend and part-time comedian Ron Jeremy.
And just as past Awards Shows have introduced some of the newest and hottest talent in the adult industry, the 2006 show will include appearances by two of ClubJenna’s hottest contract girls, Sophia Rossi and Krystal Steal.

Random Notes From A Red Notebook: August 15 PSK at Sardo's
I got a late start because I got three hours sleep Monday night so I laid down for "a few minutes" about 5:00 and slept till 10 pm. Oops. I made the trans-Burbank trek to Sardo's and found a space right in front. That doesn't happen often... Award-winning editor Sonny Malone is in an intense conversation with Steven St. Croix in a parking space, and Powder is in a small knot of smokers by the ATMs. I chat for a moment with Seymour before heading in.
Inside, I see Lexi Lamour and Ric Williams on the platform, and they graciously invite me to join them. Ric points to his Black Widow Talent T-shirt, then to Lexi: "She's my partner." In the performance space, the Weird Al impersonator guy is setting up a Kermit the Frog puppet on a small stool and kneeling behind it, the mic stand lowered to meet his diminished stature. He performs The Rainbow Connection, and quite well. I wonder how Disney would react to that. I wonder how far away Disney is from here. A few blocks, but how many?... Sonny Malone joins us, pointing out the Weird Al guy: "I know him. He's a graphic designer." She's left Danni's and is now working at Playboy (but still available for freelance, she hastens to add). She's been following the drama about Danni's on the Websites, but "I can't talk about it. I signed a non-disclosure agreement."
Can I mention that?
"Sure," she grins. "That's not a secret."
The demarcation lines are still in effect, with the non-porn people segregated by the bar. As I look around, I notice that the porn turnout is sparse. "A lot of wannabes tonight," Ric observes. John West joins us on the platform, along with a buxom Alex Monroe almost spilling out of a white bustier.
Steven St. Croix takes the mic, belts out a passable Folsom Prison Blues, although he wavers on the melody. At the bridge, he does a hip-sway that prompts somebody to observe "He's channeling Nick Manning." St. Croix is followed by Konnie from DVSX doing Toxic. Soft Cell's Tainted Love leads to a sing-along... Tee Reel swings by... A guy in full Billy Idol getup sings – wait for it – White Wedding...

At Ric's request, Kristin sings the Nat King Cole classic Orange Colored Sky. This is a highlight of the evening for me, for a couple of reasons. First, Kristin has an excellent voice, and she sings the hell out of it. That's enough right there. I dug around a bit after she sang it last time, and I found that the really scary imagery in the song, which likens falling in love to being on the receiving end of an artillery attack, reflects its post WWII origins – the returning veterans could afford to be casual about artillery attacks. It was also co-written by veteran composer Milton DeLugg, whose TV pedigree goes back to the groundbreaking late-night TV show Broadway Open House, and includes a stint with Chuck Barris, writing themes for several of Barris' TV shows and leading the band ("Milton DeLugg and the Band with a Thug") on The Gong Show. (Ever wonder why the band always played Hoop-De-Doo when they announced the winner on The Gong Show? Milton wrote it.)
But Orange Colored Sky resonates with me because right after WWII, my father was going to Los Angeles City College on the GI Bill and the group of people he hung out with (including my mother, who he met at LACC, and fellow LACC student Mel Tormé) used to frequent little nightclubs in the area and one of the clubs featured a jazz piano player who was playing in a trio with a guitar and bass and sang a little. His name was Nat King Cole.
So 60 years later, here I am, in a little neighborhood bar, digging another vocalist singing Orange Colored Sky. Maybe it's genetic. I'd say it was déjà vu, but it didn't happen to me the first time.
Sonny comes in from a smoke break with a tall cutie in tow. She introduces her as "Kara Kennedy. New talent – she hasn't even done any scenes yet." She's from Ohio, I manage to find out as we try to converse over the music... Steven St. Croix is on stage again, asking "Who's fucked up? I can't be the only one." And from the response, he isn't the only one. There's a brunette on the platform who's having trouble sitting up, I'd say she's fucked up, big time... Another new performer, Jason, sings to a big ovation. Kid has a following. Or an entourage... It gets to be 1:30, and Kristen starts the medley of the Cheers theme, a bluesy number with a refrain line "Get the fuck out," Roy Rogers crooning Happy Trails, you get the idea. I swill down the last Diet Coke of the night, topping off my caffeine buzz, and head out.
In the parking lot, I say goodbye to Sonny, who is discussing performing with a would-be male performer, and head off. I have something to do.

Two movies by maverick film-critic-turned filmmaker Lindsay Anderson play tonight and tomorrow at the New Beverly Cinema: if.... and O Lucky Man! The 1968 if.... was Malcolm McDowell's first film, in which he leads a student rebellion against a call-it-repressive school. The rebellion involves automatic weapons. O Lucky Man! (1973) checks in with the same character, Mick Travis, as he starts his post-school life as a coffee salesman in the North of England. The movie starts as a narrative, and then starts to get fanciful, like tales told around a campfire, with actors (many of whom appeared in if....) turning up in different roles and ends with a confrontation between Mick and director Lindsay Anderson. With luck it will be an uncut print: Warner Bros. cut 20 minutes for the initial US release and it was the only time a film appeared longer after 20 minutes were taken out.
Anderson was a challenging filmmaker, whose artistic choices were made as much on practicality as expression (some scenes in if.... were shot in black and white because the color film stock was too slow to get a good color image, so they used a fast black and white stock for those scenes) but the films well repay the attention paid. Neither is on DVD, although old beat-up VHS may be available.
And FWIW, I attended the first public screening of O Lucky Man! in London in 1973, and have seen it dozens of times. It'll be one more by Sunday.

Hopefully, by the end of Election Day on November 7, 2006, we normal red-blooded Americans will have taken back OUR America from those subjective-political incumbents who pander to the noisy radicals of the religious right! WE need to stand up and be counted, and the way to do that in a truly All-American way is to vote! The politicians at all levels of government need to get the message that if they interfere with American access to Adult Entertainment, they can expect to be booted out of office by the voters. If you’re not yet registered to vote, please call your Registrar of Voters TODAY and have the appropriate form(s) mailed or emailed to you; like me, you can also probably request an Absentee or Mail-in ballots so that you won’t even need to go to an actual voting booth. Voting is simple and easy, and it’s the only way we REAL citizens can keep our access to adult entertainment from being raped by politicians who foolishly think that they need to genuflect to the religious right-wing radicals. Be an All-American, VOTE!
It sounds like elements of the radical religious “police” are now mounting campaigns against mainstream magazines that typically have beautiful female models on their covers; and, they are attacking hotels that have adult films as part of their in-room television offerings. My guess is that a lot of church-going folks are among the people who read those magazines and/or are among the 50% of business travelers who pay for adult pay-per-view at All-American hotels – ironically, these same church members might themselves vote against these intrusions into their private lives! Radical religious “police” might end getting boomeranged by their own church members!
A few weeks ago at the Annual Free Speech Coalition’s “Night of the Stars” extravaganza in Los Angeles, while making an acceptance speech for an award I had just received, I took the opportunity to remind attendees that America needs the line between Church and State to stop being crossed by politicians currying favor with the hypocritical religious radicals—prayerfully, getting out the vote might help remind such pandering politicians; I also pushed attendees to help with voter registrations of fans and Adult Industry folks, and to keep our American troops in their thoughts and prayers. Some of the major stars I chatted with during the evening were: Jill Kelly, Nina Hartley, Stormy Daniels, Mr Marcus, Brittany Andrews, and many others. In an industry where we talent folks perform in the nude, it was ironic to see adult actresses and actors dressed in suits and gowns.

I hate to admit this kind of thing, but the truth is more important than petty partisan politics. I thought that the timing of the exposure of the British Terror Plot was engineered by the Evil Puppetmaster Karl Rove after Bush toady Joe Lieberman took such a beating in Tuesday's primary election in Connecticut. A timeline from thinkprogress.org indicates that the White House had minimal involvement in the investigation and the arrests, which actually makes more sense. If Turd Blossom had his slimy tendrils in it, this would have happened before the General Election, not after a Primary.
I regret the error.

Random Notes From A Red Notebook: Jenna gets waxed in Las Vegas
I'm getting used to the drive to Las Vegas. The lull of the sound of the tires on the road, the dopey commercials on The Highway Stations (at least they re-recorded that Tanya Roberts timeshare ad so it doesn't sound like she's on the phone and she doesn't refer to "seeing The Stones last week")... There's a new wrinkle in the late afternoon I'm not so fond of: at the top of the Baker Grade I leveled out and got an blinding eyeful of the setting sun from all three rear-view mirrors, and only one has that little flip-up thingee and it didn't help much. I was never so glad to take that descent into Nevada in my life... The road to the parking structure behind Treasure Island is clogged with white production trucks. Usually I'm happy to see production trucks, because they mean that people are getting work and not going elsewhere to make movies and TV shows. This is different. This is Las Vegas. This ispeople going elsewhere to make movies and TV shows. Oddly, I fall into the reaction so many of my friends have when they see production trucks: Screw you, get outta here, you're in my way... When I go in, they seem to be shooting in the Mystère theater, and the gear has big Universal logos so it could be CSI: they're shooting... Lotta self-important junior-executive types with CREW lanyards walking around so it's a hit TV show or a big-budget movie, whatever it is... Back at my hotel, I have a small setback at the craps tables. I set down $100 so I can play $50, the stack of chips seems a little small, but I set down a $3 bet on the pass line, shooter rolls, point is 10, I put down a $5 bet and the dealer pushes it back to me. I look closely at the chips and realize that I have put $15 on the pass line and tried to back it up with a $1 bet. And the point is 10, which is so unlikely to come up that the odds payoff is 2-1. I make a token odds bet of $5 and lose when a seven comes up a couple of rolls later. But at least I learned a lesson about looking at the chips.
Tuesday dawns and I head off to Madame Tussauds for the unveiling... In the Venetian casino, the industry-hangout Oculus Bar is shrouded in curtains, making it difficult to navigate without the familiar landmark... Stevie Wonder is singing that you can feel it all over... There's a large poker room by Lutèce now... Just think, if you win enough, you can eat there... I step outside and hear Michael Crawford bleating Music of the Night, as if the 17 kazillion signs saying PHANTOM THE LAS VEGAS SPECTACULAR didn't make the point that there's a new show at the hotel...
As I ride down the moving sidewalk I find myself facing a scowling Simon Cowell with a clipboard... The press lady at the front cheerily waves me in even though she can't find my name on the list... I take an escalator up and find myself face to face with paparazzi and their flashing cameras... One more escalator and I'm in the Museum proper, looking at a life-size figure of a grim-faced Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is shorter than I thought... The place where Jenna is to be unveiled is covered by a red velvet curtain, with a mirrored disco ball in front... Playboy TV is here already... Tourists wander through, unaware that there's going to be an event... Around the side of the curtain I can see that there's a statue of Hugh Hefner near Jenna... I see a man to my right, big grin, hand out to shake, he seems to recognize me, I make eye contact, I recognize him, it's Al Roker, he's made of wax, no rush, we can talk later... Johnny Depp in full Captain Jack regalia. I think I saw this guy in Anaheim recently... Another wax figure looks familiar. Gérard Depardieu... Another camera crew... A Madame Tussauds rep sees me taking notes, asks if I'm with the press, I tell him I am, and a minute or two later I'm all set up with press kit and name tag for entrée into the luncheon. That's the way to do it... A whiny lady with an east coast accent starts to complain about things. It's too cold. She doesn't like the music. I wonder why she's here, but I'm afraid to ask. She has a tattoo of a green moon shrouded by ivy on her shoulder... The local ABC station camera crew appears. I wonder if Disney knows about this. Or cares... A familiar face, photographer Scott St. James. He lives here now, and does a radio show about poker on Sirius radio... A sizeable crowd has gathered, and some of them have climbed up on a platform with Sammy Davis, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin... A Madame Tussauds rep steps through the curtain, does a double-take at the size of the crowd...

The unveiling begins. Madame Tussauds general manager Adrian Jones points out that there was an interest in a Jenna figure from guest surveys, and describes her as meeting three criteria: She's famous, she's from Las Vegas, and she is a successful businesswoman, a meme that has been turning up every time Jenna's name has been mentioned lately. He also pronounces the name of the place "Madame Too-sahds," which may be correct but sounds a little precious when I try it later... "She's been fantastic with the process," Jones continues, and adds that she was very cooperative with helping them find the right skin tones, hair colour, and replicating her tattoos. Jenna also recorded a voice track for the figure, which will speak when you touch the tattoo on her ankle... The curtain opens, and Jenna is sitting next to the figure on a fur-covered bed. Jenna is in a white and red dress, the figure is clad only in a leather belt and tiny bikini panties, her arms coquettishly covering her breasts. Jenna poses with the figure as flashbulbs go off. "You look beautiful, Jenna," a voice cries from the crowd.
"Thanks, Mike," Jenna replies.
After posing with the figure, Jenna moves off the bed for some solo shots. The face of the wax figure looks petulant as the focus of attention moves away from her. Don't worry, honey, she'll leave in a few minutes and you can have the place all to yourself, you and Hef over there... Jenna leaves, many of the tourists and several of the press stick around for uncrowded shots. A woman offers to take my picture with the figure, but I can't figure out how to pose, so I decline... The Playboy crew decides to take the picture of Jenna, then whip-pan over to Hef. Sounds good... I crawl onto the bed, poke the ankle tattoo with my finger. No voice, it must not be turned on.

I walk through the museum proper for a luncheon in the Spirit of America room, surrounded by figures of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and Princess Diana (!) among others... The Princess Diana figure is wearing a red suit the same shade as Elton John a few floors above... There's a woman here who looks like Carly, but her name tag says Kelly... Jenna talks with a reporter from Strip Las Vegas magazine, a diamond the size of an ashtray glittering on her right hand... The food is good, cheese tortellini in pesto and a chicken-and-artichoke hearts thing. Plus salad and a ton of soft drinks... In a corner, a woman is busily uploading pictures on a 17" PowerBook... Adrian Jones gets everybody's attention: To thank Jenna for all her help, he gives her, her husband Jay and her assistant small boxed gifts. Jenna poses with members of the Madame Tussauds staff, and I take the chance to talk with her after that.
After catching up (we last spoke a couple of years ago) she says she's been busy doing due diligence with the Playboy deal, and she's looking forward to working again. ClubJenna has been in production, though, and they plan to release six movies in one month very soon. "I'm gonna work my contract girls like dogs," she grins.
She also is prepping a new mainstream movie based on the story of her life, "but I'm not going to say who it's with until it's signed in blood." If you said the name of the studio, would I recognize it? "Oh yeah." Big smile.
I noticed that when you're described nowadays, the words "successful businesswoman" are used. Is this deliberate?
"Absolutely. You can't be the number-one porn star forever. I'm paving the road for other girls. Nobody ever did a deal like this before. I just finished my second season of the Playboy show – Jenna's American Sex Star – and there doesn't seem to be any limit for this. It just keeps getting better and there's no sign of stopping. I'm 32, and I'm better than ever."
And she does look good.
I ask her to sign my copy of How To Make Love Like A Porn Star ("At base, I'm still a fan," I tell her. It's true.) and whammo her assistant is right there with a silver pen for the black title page. That's impressive. She made her exit a few minutes later, and the party broke up soon after that.

On the way out, I stopped to get my shoes shined, and struck up a conversation with an elegant man in the next chair. Upper-class British accent, perfect suit, tie, textured cordovan leather shoes. He's in town for a shoe convention (the shoes were made from ostrich leg leather), and was quite impressed that Jenna was here. In fact, if she were still here, he probably would have hopped out of the chair and gone straight to Madame Tussauds, shoes half shined.
I hang around Vegas and decide to spend another night here. The Lovely Mrs. Hunter scares up a reservation at Harrahs but the date gets screwed up. I tell the clerk that I was in town for Jenna's unveiling – and he tries to fix things, but he can't scare me up a room at the same price for tonight. An SOS call to home base and The Lovely Mrs. Hunter then books me at Treasure Island. When I check in, in casual conversation with the clerk, I mention that I was in town to see Jenna's unveiling. (Hey, it worked once.) The clerk is very interested, asks a few questions about what it was like, and I show her the picture of wax-Jenna-and-real-Jenna in my camera. I wind up getting a 25th floor room, with a view of the pirate battle.
There's a lesson here: Never understimate The Power Of Jenna, and be sure to use The Power for good, never for evil.

Random Notes From A Red Notebook: The Temptation Awards
The on-again-off-again here-there-and-anywhere Temptation Awards found a home at the Bonaventure Hotel downtown, the last-minute replacement for the previously cancelled Beverly Hilton and Ritz-Carlton Huntington in Pasadena. Things got off to a lovely start when I took the Fourth Street offramp from the Harbor Freeway and passed the Bonaventure at the guest-room level. A few turns later (Are there any two-way streets in downtown L.A.?) I'm in the parking area, handing over my keys to a valet and hoping to God that the Temptation Awards validate... I find the place very easily because somebody has placed stand-up signs saying exactly where the Temptation Awards will be held, with the name of the room and the level... The Bonaventure lobby has been described as "the inside of a tooth" by some architecture critic, but I call it a "Zen maze," because once you see where you want to go, you have to walk away from it in order to get there... The previously-identical corners of the lobby have been defined by colors, making it easier to find your way around, or at least easier to describe your surroundings when you call for help... The modern flat austere bare walls (the place was built in 1976) have been covered with wood paneling and the nondescript carpet has been replaced with a discreet patterned number, adding some visual texture to the place. Along with the truly horrible sculptures in the pools. One of them looks like a modern sculpture of a face-hugger alien clamped on somebody's head.. It's only 7:00, but somebody had to get here first... Two guys take pictures of each other... Publiicist Dusty Marie puts a stamp on my wrist, which starts transferring to my dress shirt, and hands me a parking validation ticket, which brings the price down to half... I sneak into the room where the Awards will be held, get an uncomfortable feeling of déjà vu: Curtains, blue lights, big TV monitors, let's hope the band doesn't suck... You got it, I'm stalling, nobody's here yet...

I spy Dee, who hasn't been active in a while, looking as good as ever... We chat for a while, then are joined by Howard Levine from LFP... I see an old buddy of mine, a mainstream writer who has just put out a book he co-wrote with a mainstream movie director about the differences between actors and directors... Sounds hilarious... Tiffany Taylor... Brooke Hunter and Don Hollywood. She's very enthusiastic about her new video, The Reunion, which she just finished editing. "If I wanted to star in a film, I had to do it myself," she grins... I grab my camera and tell her to "look pretty," so she shoves her fingers up her nose and grimaces... I take the picture, what the hell... The deluge begins: Shy Love, Rachel Worth, Roy Karch, Monstar, Ben English, Angie Savage who I haven't seen in a long time, Sunny Lane, Jenna Jameson, Kirsten Price, Tommy Gunn and Rita Faltoyano, Jenna Jameson?!??... I'll be damned, it's her all right... Jack Lawrence, Hannah Harper and Danny from Wanted List...
Jenna sits at a table with her entourage, her star power, like a force field, keeping people at a distance... Cousin Stevie, Digital Playground's Cody, who tells me he did a scene in My First Porn 6 with Kelsey Michaels. "She's not in the business any more"... As if on cue, Joone from Digital Playground turns up. We chat a while, he says he was sad that the venue moved from the Huntington hotel because it's a beautiful place and suggests I check out the Huntington Library in Pasadena for the same elegance... Andrew Blake... Digital Playground publicist Adella, new husband in tow... Jenna Haze... Heth from Wicked Pictures... Holly Randall... Publicist Janie from High Profile Media... Somebody says "This is like PSK without the music"... I walk into the ballroom, and see a guy who is a familiar face, from back when I was a big Caroline in the City fan, played the nerdy little office assistant who was always on rollerskates. Andy Something-or-other... The dinner starts, with a glass of Domaine Chandon sparkling wine and a salad with mandarin orange slices and candied pecans.... Beats the hell out of room-temperature cheese cubes and soggy crackers... Dinner comes out, filet mignon, lobster tail, mashed potatoes and crisp green beans... This is already the best Awards show I have been to, ever. Even the Daytime Emmys didn't feed us this well, and I was a nominee... A short-haired man walks up to me, asks "Are you Tod Hunter?" It's Jeremy Spencer, here with Adonis Pictures. We catch up for a moment...

The show starts, and the band does a number. They don't suck. They're borderline good, even, and can do something with a little intricacy like a Boston number instead of head-bangin' power chords... As the third song begins, Barrett Blade leaves for the lobby. "Did you come for a concert?" No. "Me either."... The host for the evening is introduced, Andy Lauer. Lauer. That's it, I knew it was something like that... Lauer blames the loss of the Beverly Hilton venue on the hotel's owner, Merv Griffin, and "calls" Griffin on his cell phone to ask him why... The bit falls flat, and it might have been funnier if Lauer had actually called Griffin, and Griffin told him "I sold the Beverly Hilton hotel three years ago"... Lauer then walks over to interview Jenna Jameson and, wouldn't ya know it, he picks the wrong busty blonde at the table. "Do your research," Jenna says to him... The Award presentation, unfortunately, is the same as any Award presentation, long and dull... Although the pace picks up a little when the list of nominees on the video screens is replaced by the winner's name halfway through the reading of the nominees.... There are 60 categories, we're gonna be here all night... Heth accepts an Award for Wicked, Tommy Gunn gets another Award, some guy adresses Lauer as "Matt," a reference to the host of the Today show which nobody notices. I'm bored out of my skull. At 10:40, the band plays "Fool If You Think It's Over," and I decide to see what's going on in the lobby...
My mainstream-writer friend is out there – it was a bit loud for him – and we catch up for a while... Jeff Mullen and I catch up, and I get a picture of Hillary Scott... Jeremy comes out, with some of his performers, one of whom bristles when he hears my name. Turns out his real name is Todd and he thought Jeremy was using his real name... Holly Randall, happy-drunk, waves around her mother's Hall of Fame Award. I ask her to pose with it and she opens her mouth wide, still smiling, and tongues it... Can't beat that, I'm out of here...

New York Times: State Department covered up Iran overruns
As I reported back in late June (reproduced below, with a new, more-dramatic picture), the 2007 AVN awards have been booted unceremoniously from the Venetian relocated to Mandalay Bay. The self-serving press release from Eton Avenue says this is "Demonstrating the growth of the annual industry event and its broadening mainstream appeal" which is at best delusional (if you've ever seen any mainstream coverage of the awards) and more likely an outright lie (when you factor in the usual disclaimer by AVN brass that the award show is a "private affair for the industry.")
Personally, I am amused at the idea of hundreds of attendees trying to get from the Venetian to Mandalay Bay in Saturday night Strip traffic in the middle of CES. But, as Peter Marshall used to say on Hollywood Squares, this may work out.

The homeless awards show, turned out of the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and the Ritz-Carlton in Pasadena (These guys aren't from around here: If something is too naughty for Beverly Hills, Pasadena is not the place to go) have found a last-minute location at the downtown Bonaventure Hotel, which tells me that

The Bonaventure hosted the GayVNs a few years ago, and they seem to be more broad-minded than some of their hospitality-industry brethren. Good for them.

Hilts, Director of catering and sales for the Ritz-Carlton Pasadena gave reason for the cancellation stating, “This is an awards ceremony that celebrates the ‘porno’ industry, and the Ritz-Carlton does not,” and further stated, “We cannot have ‘porno’ stars in our hotel.” Ms. Hilts openly discriminating against an entire profession as she continued her assault on the adult industry in her letter saying, “you intend to use the Hotel facilities for a pornographic video awards ceremony. We cannot permit activities at the Hotel that our employees and many of our guests will find highly offensive. Your awards ceremony falls squarely within this classification.”

2257 Inspections Have Begun
Chatsworth, Ca. – The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) has learned that the Federal Government has initiated the first of the long-awaited 2257 inspections. Five FBI agents today checked the records of a major (primary) producer of adult content for specific movies, used their own copying equipment and left the location.
FSC urges you to check with your own attorney.
If you are a primary producer or a primary and a "secondary" producer, expect an inspection. If you are in the latter category and are also a member of the Free Speech Coalition, only the primary producer records are subject to inspection.
If you are exclusively a “secondary” producer, or both primary and “secondary,” and exempt from “secondary” inspection by virtue of your Free Speech Coalition membership, it is important that you ask your lawyer how to decline the Federal inspection, and notify the FSC office as soon as possible if such an inspection is attempted.
The Free Speech Coalition is the trade association for the adult entertainment industry. Its mission is to safeguard the industry from abusive government regulations and promote good business practices.

I remember when I first saw Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, at the Hollywood Pacific theatre on Hollywood Boulevard in 1968. I was amazed and astounded, and saw it several – many – maybe 30 – more times in Cinerama, 70mm, and 35mm in theatres around Los Angeles. At one showing, I just watched the little screens, ignoring the main action. I told my younger son not to see it until we could scare up a big-screen presentation, and when we finally saw it, he remarked "If that film didn't have an intermission, people's heads would explode."

It's magic
I was at the Magic Castle last night around midnight, getting ready to head into my last show of the evening (David Yee in the Close-Up Gallery) when I noticed Evan Stone and Syren in the Grand Salon. While the pilot clearly takes aim at television's current lowbrow factor, [writer-producer Aaron] Sorkin promises he is not raging against the medium that pays his bills. The characters of Matt, Danny and Jordan are all driven by the legacy they have inherited, the "medium of Sid Caesar and Jackie Gleason, Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, and it's ours now, and it matters what we do with it," Sorkin said.
That's an excellent observation. I remember when I was working in mainstream TV, I felt the same way. Okay, tabulating the responses to a questionnaire that asked 100 women in the US Army if they had ever dented a tank isn't exactly continuing the legacy of the Golden Age of Television (although I was working for one of its pioneers, Mark Goodson) but I was aware that there was a legacy here, and I was honored to be a part of it.
This idea was illuminated in 1958 in Edward R. Murrow's speech to the Radio-Television News Directors Association, which I had to find by digging through the microfilm files of the Edward R. Murrow papers in the basement of the Oviatt Library at CSUN, reeling through 35mm film strips until I found a photographic reproduction of Murrow's typewritten manuscript. Now you can find it on line with a few mouse clicks.

This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Chatsworth, Calif. – Shane’s World Studios has announced an exclusive distribution deal with Nocturnal Productions.
Nocturnal Productions is a niche-based gonzo company featuring porn stars as well as up and coming starlets. Nocturnal will be releasing its first movie at the end of September titled “The Great American Squirt-off.” The title is a true competitive squirting challenge featuring Flower Tucci, Cytherea, Angela Stone, Lexi love, Kat and Felony. Each contestant’s squirting abilities were actually measured in several categories such as distance, amount of fluid and frequency. The title also features Ron Jeremy as one of the Judges and Mike Maravich as the comedic host.
“The deal between Shane’s World Studios and Nocturnal Productions is guaranteed to be great for both companies,” said Jennie Grant, owner of Shane’s World. “It’s hard for us to find another product that we want to put our name on but with Nocturnal we see something that no one else is doing. Nocturnal Productions is taking the hardcore edge in gonzo, focusing on niches and adding entertainment value with the reality factor. We are excited to welcome them aboard!”

We were tired of seeing the same movie with the same girls. We do our research and find girls that really enjoy whatever that movies theme is. We plan to make some solid porno while letting the girls explore their sexuality. There is nothing sexier then that.”
Shane’s World Studios left their New Sensations/Digital Sin distribution deal in May. Since then the studio has been expanding their lines, director roster and now their distribution.

Mickey Spillane, the hard-boiled detective fiction writer, died Monday at his home in South Carolina. I first got turned on to Spillane in the early '70s, through a parody in National Lampoon called "My Gun Is Cute" by "Germaine Spillane." The dead-on parody, by Henry Beard, led me to investigate the real thing, and I was not disappointed by Spillane's clipped prose, whipping through book after book (any used bookstore has a treasure-trove of discarded Spillane books) and enjoying them all.
